AB132 creates a temporary State of Wisconsin Nuclear Power Summit Board to plan, promote, and host a Wisconsin nuclear power summit in Madison. The board is made up of legislative appointees, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s CEO or designee, a gubernatorial appointee, and nonvoting members representing the Nuclear Energy Institute, the Fusion Industry Association, and UW-Madison’s nuclear engineering program, with additional members allowed at the WEDC CEO’s discretion.
The bill directs the board to hold the summit no later than one month after instruction begins in the new University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering building, and to ensure attendees have access to that facility. It allows the board to set registration fees, including the option to let Wisconsin residents attend without paying fees. The board must meet at least once in 2025 and at least three times per year thereafter, elect a chairperson, and cease to exist within 180 days after the summit is completed, with any remaining property transferred to UW-Madison’s nuclear engineering department for the benefit of the program.
AB132 would add new statutory provisions creating a short-lived summit board and a continuing appropriation for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation to support the board’s work.
