Introduced
2/24/26

Caption

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE BELIEF OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT NASCAR RACING IS AN INTEGRAL AND VITAL PART OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS ECONOMY AND TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE DARLINGTON RACEWAY ON CONTINUING TO HOST TWO NASCAR RACE WEEKENDS THAT GENERATE SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC IMPACT TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AS ONE OF OUR STATE'S MOST TREASURED ATTRACTIONS AND TO NAME THE WEEKS AROUND BOTH RACES, MARCH 15-22, 2026, AND THE TRADITIONAL LABOR DAY WEEKEND, AUGUST 30 - SEPTEMBER 6, 2026, AS "DARLINGTON RACEWAY WEEK," TWO WEEKS TOO TOUGH TO TAME.

Impact

The resolution asserts that the upcoming NASCAR events at Darlington will generate substantial economic benefits, reportedly exceeding $118 million annually, inclusive of substantial tax revenue. By designating the weeks surrounding these events in March and Labor Day as 'Darlington Raceway Week', the bill seeks to enhance statewide recognition and promote tourism, proving advantageous for local businesses and community groups.

Summary

House Bill H5229 is a concurrent resolution recognizing NASCAR racing as a crucial component of the economy and cultural identity of South Carolina. The bill specifically highlights the significance of Darlington Raceway, which has hosted NASCAR events since its opening in 1950. By emphasizing the historical importance and community engagement of Darlington Raceway, the resolution aims to honor its contributions to the state.

Contention

While the bill promotes NASCAR as a valuable asset, its impact on state laws is relatively indirect since it serves more as a symbolic acknowledgment rather than a legislative change that modifies existing statutes. However, the emphasis on the importance of NASCAR may shape future funding and support for the sport and related events in South Carolina. Noteworthy points of contention may arise in discussions about prioritizing state resources towards NASCAR at the potential expense of other sporting events or local community initiatives.
